October Favorites 2011

E.L.F. Nail polish (New Formula) in "Innocent": As most of you probably know, I love e.l.f.'s new nail polish formula. It goes on smooth and opaque. I particularly am loving this shade in "Innocent." I didn't post a swatch of this shade yet but I did wear it on my toe nails and I love it! It's just this nice nude shade that really compliments my skin tone without giving me the mannequin-look.

E.L.F. natural radiance blusher in "Shy": I had this in one of my other monthly favorites posts a while back. This month, I've been wearing it a lot. It's a light baby pink shade that suits fair-skinned ladies. It doesn't show up very well on darker skin tones because it's too light. I read that this is a dupe for MAC Well Dressed and I really want to get that one sometime!

Shu Uermura eyelash curler: I recently got contact lenses and have finally been able to wear mascara again! Wearing mascara with glasses isn't ideal for me since my lashes end up hitting my glasses and end up becoming a hot mess. So before I put on my mascara, I curl my lashes with this and it does the job.

E.L.F. High Definition Powder: This is my favorite setting powder. It's a finely milled soft powder. It makes my skin look good and feel good. Just don't put too much on because you'll look like a ghost. Boo! Happy Halloween!

E.L.F. Makeup Mist & Set Spray: I love using this to freshen up my face in the middle of the day. After a long hot humid day, my makeup gets dull and is not as vibrant, especially with my oily skin, so I just spray this on my face and it helps make my makeup look more vibrant again. It also wakes me up a little, so that's a plus for me. It has aloe, green tea, cucumber, vitamins A, C, & E.
Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer: This is my all time favorite concealer. It covers my imperfections and I love the texture. I just tap a little on my visible scars after I put on my foundation or if I don't feel like wearing foundation, I just use this and set my face with a powder.

Dramamine: Okay, this is not a beauty product but this is my life savor of the month. Dramamine are motion sickness pills. I get motion sickness on a plane, on a boat, in a car, etc. This month, I've been going on boat rides and these pills helped me enjoy the ride rather than being sick to my stomach. When I went dolphin watching, I took a generic brand & it didn't work for me. I felt so sick the majority of the boat ride, so I didn't get a chance to enjoy my boat trip watching dolphins as much as I could have. I saw this girl who looked like she was sea sick as well and offered her some Dramamine. So if you ladies get motion sickness like I do, don't forget to take this before your trips.

L.A. colors eyeshadow palette in "Serenade": I love pink eye shadows! This palette is full of different shades of pink. I feel that pink is the only color besides white that I can pull off. I still love all the other shades of eye shadows, but pink is love!
Covergirl Natureluxe liquid silk foundation: I love this because it's so light and it doesn't get cakey like some foundations do. You can see my review here.

What are your October favorites? :)

Guest Blogger: "The Dark Side of Beauty" with an EOTD in Plum Galaxy

Who is she? Nancy from The Dark Side of Beauty

1) How and why did you start blogging?
I started watching Youtube beauty videos the summer after I graduated from High School. It all began with MAC's Hello Kitty collection; I saw multiple haul videos on that collection, and I was so fascinated by the products and by the people who were making the videos. I was, and still am, a huge Sanrio fan. I hesitated to buy my first MAC products, but the Hello Kitty packaging gave a huge nudge forward, and that was my first MAC purchase as well as my first department store purchase. Then, I started to look at blogs for product reviews and swatches and I became really interesting in brands like NARS, MAC, MUFE, Urban Decay, and more. I started my blog at the beginning of this year because I really enjoyed reading blogs, so I thought "why not write about what I have a passion for?" And that is how The Dark Side of Beauty began.

2) What is the focus of your blog?
The focus of my blog is really anything dark and geeky. I am a huge nerd, and you will see a lot of gaming, anime, Star Wars, and Doctor Who references there. But other than that, I love doing eye looks, reviewing products, and showing my latest additions to my nail polish collection. I started my blog with the intention to nail posts, but I my blog quickly became known more for my eye looks. It was an interesting change of plans!

3) What is your favorite makeup brand & why?
That is a tough question, especially because I love so many brands. At one point, I would have said MAC or NARS. But when I really think about the products I use all the time, I would have to say Illamasqua and Fyrinnae are my favorite brands. Illamasqua products are great quality, super pigmented, and will last you forever. I also love that Illamasqua is not afraid to step outside the boundaries and they create relly unique products. Fyrinnae has the best loose eyeshadows at a super inexpensive price. They are also hand made, vegan products. Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy is also one of my top "must-have" products because of how vibrant it makes eyeshadows look.

4) What is your favorite clothing brand & why?
I am not much of a fashion conscious person, and I would feel more comfortable wearing a band shirt or a tacky Star Wars shirt. But I do like shopping at Forever 21 occasionally. One of my favorite more girly brands is Material Girl. And If I could afford it, I would buy Vivienne Westwood clothing.

5) If you were allowed to bring only one beauty product with you, what would it be & why?
Concealer. I think concealer is such a practical product. It can cover dark circles to make you look more awake and cover redness or blemishes to give the appearance of flawless skin.

6) Do you have any favorite beauty or fashion blogs you recommend?
I love her blog! I think we share many of the same tastes, and I always know I will find great information and recommendations on her blog.
Maryam is such a gorgeous young lady who is extremely talented. She is also very sweet and kind. I love her looks and her posts.
And there is just so many wonderful girls out there, so definitely take the time to check out some new blogs :D

7) What is a tip you would like to share with incoming beauty or fashion bloggers?
I think the best advice I can give to new bloggers it this: stick with it. Don't get discouraged if you don't have many followers at first. I got discouraged many times, and I almost quit blogging several times. But as you can see, I am still here ^_^ Have faith in yourself.
Other than that, of course, just be yourself.

Now onto Nancy's guest post:

EOTD: Plum Galaxy

Products Used:
-Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy
-MAC Blue Sheen eyeshadow (You can use any dark, shimmery navy color)

-Urban Decay 15th Anniversary Palette (Vanilla and Junkshow)

How to Achieve This Look:

2.Apply a shimmery dark navy eyeshadow on the crease and the outer V. Make sure to blend the color upwards past the crease and down onto the lid (I used MAC Blue Sheen).
3.Apply a glittery plum color on the center of the lid and blend it into the dark navy (I used Revlon Plum Galaxy).
4.Then, apply a pale gold shadow on the brown bone (I used Vanilla from the UD Palette).
5.Apply the same navy color on your lower lash line.
6.Take a bright pink shadow, and lightly apply it on the lower lash line, below the navy blue. (I used Junkshow from the UD palette).
7. Apply a glitter shadow on the inner corner of the eye (I used Illamasqua Beguile pigment)>
8.Remove the scotch tape in one fluid motion. You should have a sharp eyeshadow line.
9.Apply liquid liner and mascara.

You are done! <3

Thanks for the guest post, Nancy!
This is such a gorgeous look definitely worth trying!

E.L.F. nail polish in Fire Coral (New Formula)

The formula is great! Applies on smooth.
You only need 1 to 2 coats.
It only costs $2.00
Their nail polishes used to cost $1.00 but that was their old formula, which I disliked because it was streaky and difficult to work with.
I am in love with their new formula and am planning to check out more of the other shades. :)

Have you ladies tried E.L.F.'s new formula nail polishes?

Guest Blogger: "Lilith's Fashion" with The best way to choose your foundation color

Who is she? Lilith from Lilith's Fashion

1) How and why did you start blogging?
I have been blogging on and off for a few years with various websites like livejournal, xanga, tumblr, and more. In July 2011 I started to really get serious with it though. I noticed when I watched films or the telly I would see these really cute outfits on people, and wondered where on earth they got that beautiful dress, or blouse, etc. I found myself googling things like, “Anne Hathaway Miss Congeniality outfit” and I did this on numerous occasions. I seldom would find answers from other people, and when I did the prices were outrageous. So I decided I’d put together my own blog for myself and other people interested in fashion.

2) What is the focus of your blog?
My fashion blog has a few different aspects to it. The main part of it is finding celebrity looks for the average person on a budget. Right now I just have women’s celebrity “looks under $100” --- but perhaps in the future I’ll expand to higher amounts, or even a men’s section. I find a celebrity look that I think is lovely, and then I go searching online for similar pieces that are budget-friendly. Not everyone has the ability to spend $500+ on just one item like some of these famous folks do! I also like to share coupons/sale info that I find from clothing websites--- I mean, who doesn’t love a coupon? There is a section in my blog dedicated to my own looks as well, but I haven’t posted too much from my own closet; I do plan to do more of those! I see so many great inspirational outfits from other bloggers closets; it’s such a great way to see different styles. Lastly, I must admit that I am a shoe addict. Of course I had to have a section of my blog completely dedicated to shoes. When I find a cute shoe, for a good deal I post a photo and link up!

3) What is your favorite makeup brand & why?
Wow! There are SO many great products and brands out there. I think I’d have to go with MAC though; although the price is a bit on the high side, it is great quality. On my eighteenth birthday I decided to give them a try as a birthday present to myself, and I was in love with the brand.

4) What is your favorite clothing brand & why?
I find myself picking up a lot of my clothing from H&M, Charlotte Russe, and Forever 21. When I head to the mall those are my first three stops. H&M is my go-to store for dresses most of the time, I like the quality of their items. They also give a nice variety of items. Out of the three stores I named, I believe that H&M is the most expensive; quality over quantity though! Charlotte Russe on the other hand is where I like to get shoes from; I find comfortable, cute, and budget friendly shoes there. A lot of the time I notice they have a BOGO deal on shoes if you keep checking back, and I’ve never bought a shoe from them that I wasn’t head over heels for! Forever 21 is where I find my shorts/skirts most of the time. Lately I’ve found too many beautiful skirts at that store, and I have to keep trying things on and talking myself out of over-spending. I don’t know about other F21 shops, but the one by me has friendly staff which makes it that much better. Forever 21 isn’t the most amazing quality depending on the item(s), but they still have wonderful items and aren’t all that expensive either. Just can’t go wrong!

5) If you were allowed to bring only one beauty product with you, what would it be & why?
I would bring my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Powder! I usually like to put on foundation and then powder because I feel like it really gives a polished look, but the MAC powder does a great job all by itself too. Evens out my skin, gives great coverage, looks finished all on its own, and is just overall wonderful. If you haven’t tried a MAC powder, you should really consider it by the way!

6) Do you have any favorite beauty or fashion blogs you recommend?
While I usually look at all the new posts that show up in my “blog updates feed” there are three that I always make sure to take a look at. The first one is “A Fashion Blog by Hope Bidinger” (, the second one is “The Fancy Teacup:  A Style Diary” (, and the third one is “Raving Fashionista” (

7) What is a tip you would like to share with incoming beauty or fashion bloggers?
There are many things that I could probably say, but I think I’ll finish this off with one of my favorite quotes. “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous” by Coco Chanel. I think that’s the best thing I could tell a new or established beauty or fashion blogger, because I’ve noticed that bloggers on here just being their fabulous self are the most interesting ones.

Now onto Lilith's guest post:

The best way to choose your foundation color
The best way to choose a foundation color is to conduct a stripe test.
    Here are The Rules...
Always conduct your stripe test in natural light.
Start with three different foundation shades to compare and contrast. (The areas you will test the shades also depend on your skin tone.)
Finally, if the shade you choose is the best match with your neck color, you will pass the stripe test with an A+!

Ivory And BeigeIf you have ivory or beige skin tones, conduct the stripe test from jaw to neck to get a true match to the neck. Women with these skin types tend to have redness in their faces, but not in their necks, so it's important to get a true match. Start by applying three stripes of the different foundation shades from your jaw to your neck and wait a few minutes to see if the oils in your skin change the color pigments. Select the one that most closely matches your neck.

Bronze and Ebony
Women with bronze and ebony skin tones should stripe-test from the cheek area to the jaw area, because some women with these skin tones have "facial masking" or lighter skin on the interior of the face and darker skin on the outer edges of the face. Start by applying three stripes of the different foundation shades extending from your cheek to your jaw area, and wait a few minutes to see if the oils in your skin changes the color pigments. If you have any degree of facial masking, it's suggested that you try applying two shades of foundation to perfect your skin tone. One shade to brighten your skin, and another to deepen it.

Choose Yellow Over Pink
As mentioned previously, yellow foundation complements almost any skin tone. The only time pink is a better choice is if you have pink undertones in your neck as well as your face, which is very rare. Most women with pink in their faces do not have it in their necks. Pink foundation on top of a pink face can become red --- and no one wants a red face. Foundations and powders with pink hues actually age the skin and make it appear unnatural, yet many mature women choose pink to give their faces more color. Remember that the color should be provided by your blush and lipstick, not by the base (foundation and powder).

Yellow foundations can actually counteract skin conditions such as Rosacea and broken capillaries. Women with these skin conditions or with ruddy skin tones sometimes feel that yellow foundations look too yellow because they are used to seeing all the red in their faces. Be patient though, your skin will start to absorb the foundation and work with it better. Your eyes will begin to get used to seeing the red neutralized, and you'll soon start to notice your gorgeous, even, natural skin tone.

In contrast, many women with yellow in their skin will try to counteract that by choosing a pink foundation. This isn't a good choice. You should embrace and enhance the yellow tones in your skin to make it appear younger, fresher, and alive.

Women with ebony skin should match the undertones in their skin exactly because they are so distinct and noticeable. They can range all the way from golden-orange to true brown. Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to brighten (not lighten) ebony skin. Intense golden-orange tones work well for brightening ebony skin.
Thanks for the guest post, Lilith!

Review time! Clean & Clear deep action cream cleanser (oil-free)

I got this when my boyfriend was here and I haven't seen him for a couple months now so I've had this for a while.
To the right is how the product looks when blended. It's a cream cleanser.

  • It really does have that cool, tingling sensation that I love! (Some of you may dislike that.)
  • Oil-free
  • Does not clean face well: I still have some makeup and dirt on my face after using this. So if you're going to use this, I recommend using a makeup remover cleanser prior to using this.
Overall, I'm definitely not going to repurchase this. I love the tingling sensation but I want a cleanser that actually cleans my face well.

Have you ladies tried this cleanser before?
Do you have any recommendations on cleansers?

Acne Free!

So if you ladies read my blog, you know that I've been using the Clinique acne solutions kit. I did finish the small kit and repurchased the regular sized products. Ever since then, my face has been under control and acne free with the exception of "the time of the month." I'm just about done with my Clinique acne free solutions moisturizer which I use as a spot treatment for the little pimples I get now and then. & so I wanted to try other products. I looked through my drawer and I found my e.l.f. zit zapper and e.l.f. mineral blemish powder that I purchased but never really used. So I started using them when I break out and I wanted to share my thoughts about them.
I actually use them together. I first apply the e.l.f. zit zapper that has a little rolling ball that rolls some of the liquid product out and then I apply the e.l.f. mineral blemish powder on top of the wet area where I just applied the e.l.f. zit zapper. So right after I put the zit zapper on, before it dries up, I put the blemish powder on top so it sticks to my face.
I've got to say, I was pleasantly surprised of how effective these two products were on my acne. The first time, I used these two on a pimple that I had & I put them on my pimple before I slept. The next morning, my pimple significantly shrank in size. So whenever I break out or feel a pimple forming, I use these two combined and it works really well. I personally don't know how effective each product is on its own but I did see good reviews on both products and you can find those reviews online. I know my friend tried one of these products or both separately and she told me they don't do anything for her. So I was surprised that they worked for me, but I do use them together and not separately.

Here are the ingredients on both products:
E.L.F. zit zapper: Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil, Witch Hazel and Camphor.
E.L.F. mineral blemish powder:
What do you ladies think?
Have you tried these products before?
